Fatty Acids for Skin: Why Fat Is the Secret to Healthy, Nourished Skin
Historically, fats have been given a bad reputation.
But the truth is, our cells are largely made up of fats. When the body is deprived of these nutrient-dense compounds, it can impact health on a cellular level. Fatty acids naturally found in fats are essential for building and maintaining healthy cells, supporting not only the body but also the skin.
It’s no surprise that this shows up in the complexion, too. Your skin depends on a balanced ratio of fatty acids to function optimally. As research continues to uncover the role of fats within the body and skin, the importance of fatty acids for healthy, resilient skin becomes even clearer.
Fatty acids nourish and moisturise the skin in a deeply biocompatible way, which is exactly why topical fats are such an important part of our formulations.
Our connection to nature and its resources inspired this deep dive into the role of fatty acids in skin health and longevity. We even partnered with our suppliers to better understand the fatty acid profiles within our ingredients, and what they discovered was remarkable.
Simply put, fatty acids are one of nature’s most transformative tools for healthy skin.
What Are Fatty Acids?
Fair warning, researching fatty acids can quickly become overwhelming. There’s a lot of science-heavy terminology involved. So, let’s simplify it and focus on what really matters: how fatty acids support the skin.
Fatty acids are naturally occurring compounds found in both plant- and animal-based ingredients. Although the word “acid” may sound harsh, fatty acids are incredibly nourishing, soothing, and supportive of healthy skin function.
Inside the body, fatty acids are essential for overall health. They contribute to nearly every system, including critical hormone production. Some of their key roles include:
- Supporting heart health
- Regulating inflammation
- Maintaining healthy blood pressure
- Promoting a balanced immune system
- Supporting the nervous system
But their benefits don’t stop there. Fatty acids are also vital for skin health.
Why?
→ Fatty acids are the building blocks of lipids, which play a key role in supporting the skin barrier and microbiome. Lipids help provide structure at a cellular level, strengthening the skin’s natural protective functions.
There are many different types of fatty acids, each offering unique benefits for the skin. Let’s explore them.
Types of Fatty Acids
There are several ways fatty acids are classified, but to keep things simple, the two most important distinctions are:
- Whether they are essential or non-essential
- Their saturation rate
1. Essential vs. Non-Essential Fatty Acids
Non-Essential Fatty Acids – These are fatty acids that the body can create on its own by converting amino acids from food. (Another reason why a protein-rich diet is important for overall health and longevity.)
Essential Fatty Acids – These cannot be produced by the body and must come from food, supplements, or topical skincare. You’ve likely heard of the most well-known essential fatty acids, such as Omega-3 and Omega-6.
2. Saturation Rate
Each fatty acid profile has a different structure and consistency, giving it unique benefits for both the body and skin.
Saturated Fatty Acids – Highly emollient and excellent for softening skin and locking in moisture. These are usually solid at room temperature.
(Examples: tallow, mango butter, shea butter, coconut oil)
Monounsaturated Fatty Acids – Supportive and restorative for the skin barrier. They tend to be slightly thicker and are typically liquid at room temperature but may solidify when chilled.
(Examples: emu oil, olive oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil)
Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) – Particularly soothing for inflammatory skin conditions. They can help reduce redness, balance sebum production, and protect against oxidative stress and free radicals. These are usually lightweight and liquid at room temperature.
(Examples: sunflower oil, castor oil, pumpkin seed oil)
Note: PUFAs, especially seed oils, sometimes receive criticism in nutrition discussions. However, when sourced and processed correctly, they become valuable components of balanced skincare. That’s why we only use cold-pressed oils, avoiding high heat and chemical extraction methods.
Every natural fat contains its own unique blend of beneficial fatty acids. This reflects nature’s innate balance and synergy, something that sits at the heart of our soil-to-skin philosophy.
Fatty Acid Sources
Fatty acids are commonly obtained through diet, but many of these nutrient-rich sources can also be used topically to nourish and support the skin. Common sources include:
- Fatty fish and fish oil supplements
- Nuts and seeds
- Algae oil
- Tallow and emu oil
A balanced variety of fatty acids is important not only for overall health, but also for healthy, resilient skin.
Why You Need Fatty Acids for Skin
Fatty acids are essential for the structure, protection, and function of the skin. Choosing skincare rich in a balanced blend of beneficial fatty acids can help support long-term skin health and longevity.
Products rich in fatty acids may help:
- Protect and restore hydration while reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss)
- Soothe dryness
- Improve skin texture and suppleness
- Support healthy aging
- Strengthen the skin against environmental stressors and pathogens
- Encourage faster skin recovery and healing
- Calm inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis
- Provide antioxidant protection against oxidative stress
- Balance sebum production for a clearer complexion
- Reduce the appearance of photodamage and sun damage
A note on comedogenicity: Richer fatty acids are not a concern within our formulations. Every product is carefully balanced and expertly formulated to ensure the skin receives the benefits without feeling heavy or congested.
With that in mind, let’s explore some of our favourite fatty acid-rich ingredients for healthy, thriving skin.
Our Favourite Ingredients Rich in Fatty Acids for Skin
Traditional ancestral practices often combined both plant and animal fats to nourish, protect, and soothe the skin. Fatty acids are also highly biocompatible, meaning they work harmoniously with the skin and absorb beautifully.
Here are a few of the fatty acid-rich ingredients that play an important role in many of our formulations.
Animal-Based Fats: Grass-Fed Tallow + Emu Oil
Tallow and emu oil contain an exceptional blend of skin-supportive fatty acids. Ethical sourcing and integrity are central to our ethos, and we honour the ancestral nose-to-tail philosophy in all animal-based ingredients we use.
→ Our tallow comes exclusively from ethically raised, grass-fed cows. This not only respects the life of the animal but also results in a more nutrient-dense fat.
→ Our emu oil is sourced from a trusted ethical farm where the birds are pasture-raised, free-range, and fed a biologically appropriate diet. Every part of the animal is respected and utilised responsibly.
These ingredients provide a supportive balance of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
SATURATED FATTY ACIDS
Loved for their moisturising and softening properties.
→ Palmitic Acid – Helps prevent moisture loss and improves skin texture for a smoother, healthier appearance.
→ Stearic Acid – Works alongside oleic acid to soften, moisturize, and support skin regeneration while improving elasticity.
→ Myristic Acid – Helps smooth the skin, strengthen the moisture barrier, and create a protective layer.
MONOUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS
Deeply nourishing and supportive for the skin barrier.
→ Oleic Acid – Naturally found in human sebum, making it highly compatible with the skin. It acts as an excellent moisturizer and emollient.
→ Palmitoleic Acid – Helps maintain healthy skin structure while enhancing the benefits of other fatty acids.
POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS
Known for their soothing and calming properties.
→ Linoleic Acid – An essential fatty acid that the body cannot produce on its own. Helps maintain the skin barrier and prevent water loss.
→ Linolenic Acid – Supports skin integrity and helps calm inflammation.
One of the most fascinating aspects of these ingredients is their natural balance. Tallow contains a higher concentration of saturated fatty acids, while emu oil is richer in monounsaturated fatty acids. Together, they provide unique support for different skin concerns, nature working in perfect harmony.
Plant-Based Ingredients Rich in Fatty Acids
While animal-based ingredients are incredibly biocompatible, many plant oils also offer beautiful fatty acid profiles that support the skin. Some of our favourite plant-based ingredients include:
- Cold-pressed castor oil – Rich in ricinoleic acid, known for its soothing and regenerative properties.
- Cold-pressed jojoba oil – Contains eicosenoic acid and closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum.
- Cold-pressed sunflower oil – Rich in moisturising and anti-inflammatory fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acid.
Both research and anecdotal evidence continue to show that balanced fatty acid profiles can dramatically support the skin when applied topically. These ingredients provide exceptional nourishment, moisture, and protection for the skin’s most essential functions.
And as always, our commitment remains the same: to create pure, non-toxic, and truly transformative skincare.
